What is an orthodontist?
Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth.
Only those with this formal education may call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists may be members of the Ontario Association of Orthodontists (OAO).
3 Reasons to See an Orthodontist
- Orthodontic treatments. If you or your young children have bite issues, seeing an orthodontist as early as possible will help prevent the need for invasive treatment. An orthodontist will be able to evaluate the alignment of your teeth and jaws and determine whether intervention is necessary. Waiting too long to see an orthodontist can cause minor dental problems to worsen.
- Physical improvements. Improving your smile also helps boost your self- confidence. Bad bites, gaps between teeth, protruding teeth, crooked or overcrowded teeth are only some issues that orthodontics can fix. If you feel conscious because of issues with your smile, consult an orthodontist. Find out which treatment is best for your needs.
- Dental education and complimentary consultation. Today’s orthodontic treatments are designed to be comfortable. While traditional treatment methods, such as braces, are still available, there are now more options to correct teeth alignment. Only an orthodontist will be able to offer you a wide variety of treatment options and you can rest easy knowing you’re taken care of by a specialist.
