Prioritizing oral health from an early age is key to ensuring a lifetime of healthy smiles. Children can start seeing a dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts or around 12 months of age.

After the first visit your child will start a regular dental checkup schedule, just as they do with their pediatrician.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Your first visit to our office typically includes a digital X-ray that allows us to view the structure of the jaw, the position of any teeth below the gumline, root condition, and any tooth decay.

The initial visit also involves getting your child’s medical history. Please provide complete, up-to-date health information. This will help us select the safest and most effective treatment methods.

We can also teach your children how to prevent tooth decay. If you’re having difficulties getting them to brush or floss their teeth, we can help. We ensure our youngest patients enjoy their time at the dental office which should encourage easier repeat visits.

You may feel tempted to delay your child’s first dental visit but doing so can have serious effects. Early cavities, toothaches, and infections can result in reduced appetite, poor sleep quality, and behavioral problems. These issues can also impact your child’s self-esteem and ability to socialize.
